MUII aims to contribute to the research capacity building pyramid by providing exposure to world-class science for school children, school-leavers and undergraduates, Masters, PhD and post-doctoral fellows, and by mentoring post-doctoral scientists to progress to positions of leadership.
To build African research capacity it is necessary to solicit public support and to attract young people to science and to research as school children and undergraduates. There is a research capacity building pyramid, whereby many young people must be recruited in order to produce a few, successful senior scientists.
These key senior scientists drive the future of science in their countries, but they are, in turn, supported by effective research teams, managers and technical staff, at different levels of the pyramid. A good public understanding of science is also essential to supporting researchers and to ensuring that their work is both funded and implemented
